NBC 205:2024 "Ready to Use Guideline for Low Rise Reinforced Concrete Buildings without Masonry Infill" is approved for mandatory application by terminating NBC 205:1994 "Mandatory Rules of Thumb Reinforced Concrete Buildings without Masonry Infill". This code is the first & complete revision of the earlier version of NBC 205:1994 which supersedes its earlier version. The main objective of the code has been kept the same: to provide ready-to-use drawings for various structural & non-structural elements of reinforced concrete frame buildings falling under Building Category C according to clause 8(c), Building Act, 2055.
The basic purpose of this code is to regulate building construction in municipalities and rural municipalities where professional engineers and technicians are not available and buildings are constructed under the guidance and supervision of mid-level technicians (subengineers). The earlier version of this code was based on the seismic design code NBC 105:1994 which has been revised as NBC 105:2020 “Seismic Design of Buildings in Nepal”. Thus, due to the revision in the seismic code, NBC 205:2024 has also been revised accordingly.
NBC 205:2024 is revised with rigorous study, a series of consultations, and discussions with experts, professionals, and stakeholders in the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC). Various possible configurations of buildings are structurally designed according to NBC105:2020 “Seismic Design of Buildings in Nepal”. The most critical configuration of the building is used to prescribe the structural drawings for two-story and three-story buildings with different soil types and seismic zone factors separately. Accordingly, the respective structural drawings can be readily adopted for approval from the municipalities.
